Orluis Aular continues to impress at the 2025 Giro d’Italia. The Venezuelan rider from Movistar Team delivered another standout performance in Stage 5, finishing fourth — a result that feels like a win, especially following two previous podium finishes in this year’s race.
Movistar’s decision to back Aular over Fernando Gaviria for the Giro is proving to be a masterstroke. While Aular is racking up strong results in one of cycling’s Grand Tours, Gaviria has struggled in smaller events. After finishing 27th in the Classique Dunkerque yesterday, the Colombian could only manage 18th in the opening stage of the 4 Jours du Dunkerque.
Aular, on the other hand, is in exceptional form. He crossed the line fourth in Stage 5, behind only Mads Pedersen, Edoardo Zambanini, and Tom Pidcock. Speaking at the finish line, he reflected on the sprint: “It was a really tough sprint with that 800-metre climb at the end,” Aular said. “To be honest, I was a bit out of position going into that final ramp. The team did help me get into a good spot, but I paid the price for a small mistake. I had to fight my way back from the bottom of the climb, and I think that cost us a better result. But I felt strong, and honestly, Pedersen had his teammate setting the pace — that made the difference.”
Though the stage win remains just out of reach, Aular isn’t losing hope. The Venezuelan remains optimistic about his chances: “Yes, I’m definitely motivated,” he concluded. “I’m feeling good, even though there have been a couple of tough nights. But the motivation is what keeps me going.”
