Antonio Tiberi was one of those to try and push the Maglia Rosa on the final climb, making multiple attacks.
In the end, the Italian was forced to settle for 4th on the day, still enough to move up to 6th overall in the general classification. “It wasn't planned, but when I didn't see anyone attacking, I wanted to see if I could drop someone," Tiberi reflected in his post-stage interview with Eurosport. "We were almost at the finish."
Sadly for Tiberi, every time he attempted to launch an attack, the Maglia Rosa was straight onto his back wheel, nullifying the move. With the stage being finished with a reduced bunch sprint, Pogacar then made his move with none of the GC contenders being able to follow.
“Then came the sprint and Pogacar won. Congratulations to him," Tiberi concludes. "It was a tough ride from the start. I knew the stage well, because I had explored it a few weeks ago. Fortunately it went well. After the time trial the feeling was already great. Just survive tomorrow and then rest for a while.”
