Ahead of the 2025 Tour de France, Remco Evenepoel has revealed his ambition to take on one of cycling’s most storied challenges: the world hour record. Evenepoel is of course a two time world time trial champion, and also the Olympic Games time trial champion, and is currently targeting the podium again at this year’s Tour. But, he has acknowledged that the hour attempt is part of his future goals.
“Yes, I would like to do that, but I have to wait a few more years,” the two-time world time trial champion told L’Équipe. “I think it is definitely possible for me to beat the current world hour record.”
The benchmark to beat is 56.792 kilometers, set by Filippo Ganna in 2022. Evenepoel’s interest in the record isn’t new, just last month, Belgian cycling legend Eddy Merckx publicly encouraged him to take it on.
“My career would not be complete without the Record,” Merckx said. “At the end of 1972, I felt tired, I wasn’t in form, but after three weeks of specific preparation in Italy, I was recovered. We crossed the Atlantic to Mexico and it all worked out well. But I suffered a lot. After that effort, I could barely walk for a week.”
