"It was not the easiest race. We left the ride on our own at the start and then we said we're not going to isolate ourselves. Mark [Donovan] did a great job controlling by himself. He was holding the gap, he was quite big, six and a half, seven minutes... And then UAE came to help".
Tom Pidcock on the podium of Tre Valli Varesine
Police motorbike collides with Pinarello riders
But what Pidcock described next was an incident that remained largely unreported on during the race. "But then a police motorbike was going the wrong way down the course. And it crashed into two of our guys," Pidcock tells.
"So from this point... Well first of all I wanted to stop the race. But I stopped racing myself and I was mad. Guys all riding in front of me for me, and two of them on the floor".
In the wake of the passing of Finlay Tarling at the Volta a Portugal, tragedy is still very fresh in the peloton. At the Coppa Bernocchi, only 24 hours ago, a vehicle entered the race route live on TV broadcast. This Tuesday, one of the organization's own motorbikes hit the peloton head-on.
"Luckily Marcel [Camprubi] was ok, he could continue. Tom [Gloag] was also ok in the end, but he stopped the race. He has some stitches in his knee. But things like this shouldn't happen. But yeah, we continued and we got back in the race".
Pidcock ready for Il Lombardia
Pidcock then got away with Matteo Jorgenson and Jarno Widar in the final 15 kilometers of the race. Victory appeared possible, although he had two strong riders with him for a three-up sprint.
With a swift acceleration, Jarno Widar took the glory on the day. Pidcock arrived second. "And I'm happy that I could be on the podium. It's a shame I couldn't win, but I think, yeah, I'm still happy".
The Briton shares that he did not expect Widar to come through with such speed. "No, I was not. I mean, now I know, it's good to know for the future, it was very quick".
"I don't know how much of a jump he got on us, but when he went, I went immediately. But he already had a gap and he was not far to the finish then. So, yeah, very impressive sprint by him. So, chapeau".
For the Pinarello - Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team rider, it was a valuable race to prepare for Il Lombardia, his final big goal of the year - where he will be one of the contenders.
"Yeah, I mean, today I didn't feel amazing. I felt a little bit heavy-legged. But, you know, in these races at the end of the year, I think always the feelings are a little bit strange," he concluded.
"So always you need to just keep focused. In the end, I was still pretty strong and I can be happy with where I am. Now a few easy days, one final [racing] day in Europe":
