Matteo Jorgenson has been on a stellar run of form, but has also often had teammates recently taking victories. At Tre Valli Varesine he found himself in the position to win, but could only take a podium result after being placed in an unusual situation.
Visma had the numbers and with Giro dell'Emilia winner Davide Piganzoli making moves earlier in the day, it was Jorgenson's opportunity to be the one part of the winning attack this Tuesday in Varese.
At the World Championships he was crucial for Brandon McNulty's win; and this past Saturday he's done similar for Piganzoli. In the final 15 kilometers of Tre Valli Varesine, he found himself racing in the front with Tom Pidcock and Jarno Widar.
Initially, his plan was to not work. He attacked as well, but Tom Pidcock's words and gestures made the difference in the matter with 10 kilometers to go. Jorgenson would collaborate, despite knowing that in a sprint he stood small chances of winning.
"We knew it would not be easy coming to the finish line with Tom and Jarno. I knew I was in a bit of a sticky situation there," Jorgenson said in a post-race interview with CyclingPro.net.
"But it was still a good day. I didn't really have the legs to attack any earlier. I was kind of cramping the whole last climb," he revealed.
In the final sprint he was the last from the front group, securing the podium but not going beyond it. "I'm happy with third and congrats to Jarno. That was a nice sprint".

Jorgenson didn't expect the finale to play out in a sprint at the start of the race and of finding himself in one. He described his thoughts before the final sprint, in which he was not the strongest out of the group.
"I was trying to think about what sprinters do. I don't do it very often. So I was thinking 'ok, what do I do here? Do I kind of look back? Do I go early?' Just kind of faking it. Faking it until you make it".

Jorgenson aims towards Il Lombardia

Nevertheless the Team Visma | Lease a Bike rider showed good legs and will be an outsider to win Il Lombardia this Saturday. In the absence of Tadej Pogacar, the race could become tactical and the American will be amongst those who can surprise.
"Definitely. It was a good day out. I hope for my best result in Lombardia so far. It shouldn't be so difficult to do that. I'm looking forward," he concluded.
