Close but no cigar for Tibor del Grosso in Spain. After coming 20 meters short of upset victory in the opening stage of Volta a Catalunya, the Alpecin-Deceuninck youngster was again in the mix on day 5, but was once again beaten to the line by even younger Matthew Brennan.
"It was windy all day," Del Grosso said to Eurosport, looking back on the fifth stage. "I had actually hoped that the echelons would appear a bit earlier, because it had been very nervous for a long time. It looked like it wouldn’t happen at all, but then it suddenly did. I was in it, so that was nice. But the sprint was hectic because of the headwind."
The sprint was started from far away by Axel Laurance. "I tried to get on Matthew’s wheel myself, but it was a fight. That’s where it went a bit wrong for me. But I still did okay. I’m happy with this podium place. It was close for second place."
