"I am quite important for Remco, and that is why I decided to take a day off" - Ilan Van Wilder to prioritise Remco Evenepoel over ITT stage on Tuesday

Remco Evenepoel was able to defend the red jersey in the ninth stage of Vuelta a Espana, and Ilan Van Wilder played a crucial role in it. He finished in 54th place, 8 minutes and 30 seconds behind stage winner Louis Meintjes.
"The start was again very difficult for us," Van Wilder told WielerFlits. He continues, "Everyone wanted to attack us, and we were put under pressure for a while. We handled that well and kept control for the rest of the day.”

Van Wilder also revealed he will not prioritize the ITT stage on Tuesday since he wants to preserve energy to help Remco in future stages. "In consultation with the team. The team has nothing to gain if I become tenth or fifteenth and ride myself completely over the head. I am quite important for Remco, and that is why I decided to take a day off. There will be plenty of time trials for me this year or next,” concluded Van Wilder. He is currently in the 48th position in GC, 36 minutes and 29 seconds behind overall leader Remco Evenepoel.

- I don’t call the writers here journalists, they are at best paid posters, no more knowledgable than many of us. I certainly don’t agree with everything they say or portray but I do understand they have to provoke to make their hitherto business model sustainable. And as it isn’t possible to discuss with them, it’s more interesting, rewarding and instructive to pick points to discuss with people willing to engage. I choose and have my own reasons for positive of negative opinions on riders and engage when someone disagrees on those, not interested in engaging on other reasons. What I agree with or don’t is pretty irrelevant though, I think you’ll agree JV gets his fair share of lifestyle criticism (also here) so why should TP be exempt? - it is too simple to base improvement on points alone. Quick-Step lost a lot of points but might gain more wins and are shifting their focus. - All very sad. But you seem to be backing the journalists in generally demonising Tadej and canonising Jonas. This article is interesting though, and suggests Jonas is making very good financial decisions, acquiring luxury homes that he and his family are enjoying living in, and staying near family (also now in luxury homes) who can help with the kids.
