“I actually don’t know yet" - Jonas Vingegaard won't rule out World Championships start after abandoning Tour de France with broken collarbone

Jonas Vingegaard has hinted that his season could get a new lease of life as he refused to rule out a participation at the 2026 UCI World Championships in Montreal. The Visma | Lease a Bike rider is currently recovering from a broken collarbone after crashing at the Tour de France.
Until his stage 15 crash ended his Tour, the majority of the season had gone to plan for the Dane as he took Paris-Nice, Volta a Catalunya and Giro d'Italia victories before competing with Tadej Pogacar at the Tour.
However, it all came crashing down in a roundabout corner as his race was ended abruptly and his short and medium term future to be re-assessed. Neither Vingegaard nor Visma have officially confirmed what's next for the four-time Grand Tour winner.
But the cycling world seemingly came home to find out as Vingegaard's hometown hosted the second stage of the Tour of Denmark on Thursday in Glyngøre as he was honoured for his performance at the Giro d'Italia.
Opening up on his feelings following the crash, Vingegaard highlighted his need for a break away from the grind of professional cycling.

“I needed a break after the Tour. It’s been a tough year and a tough bike race, so in any case I needed a break because there's been so much,” Vingegaard said.
Vingegaard had surgery on his collarbone shortly after leaving the race. Providing an update, he claimed the recovery has gone to plan and that he still has a way to go before he can return to full training.
He added: “It’s getting better, it’s not really bad anymore. I can use my arm now. It’s not quite like before, but it will be.”

When quizzed about his potential return to racing, the topic of the World Championships in Montreal on September 27th is something Vingegaard hasn't ruled out. Rival Pogacar is sizing up a bid to win his third rainbow jersey in a row, and Vingegaard can't say for sure he'll be at the start line.
“I actually don’t know yet, it depends on how the collarbone reacts, and how it heals, and how it recovers. It’s not out of the question for me, but I also don’t want to say now that it’s going to happen.”
Vingegaard hasn't been a prolific one-day rider throughout his career and has never ridden the World Championships road race at elite level, with his last outing being in the under-23 race in 2018.
