Giro d'Italia reverses decision, Geoghegan Hart starts stage 2 as KOM leader after organizers confirm error in Brandon McNulty's timer

There was some controversy at the Giro d'Italia yesterday regarding the KOM classification. The fastest rider up the final hilltop to the finish was set to receive the maximum points and jersey, but the wrong rider stepped onto the podium. Brandon McNulty was initially awarded the points but the decision has now been reversed.

This is because the transponder on the American's bike had an error at some point within the first intermediate split. Analyzing split times and the UAE Team Emirates' Strava activity it was possible to see that he hadn't been the quicker in the final ascent. This mistake was captured yesterday but the podium celebrations had already taken place.

This morning however the decision has been overturned, Tao Geoghegan Hart will instead start with the KOM jersey as the times of Brandon McNulty were confirmed to be wrong. This does not change the overall classification or stage result as it was a technological mistake.
