Four-year suspension confirmed for Giovanni Carboni - Former Unibet Rose Rockets rider has doping infraction verified

Cycling records a new doping case. The International Testing Agency (ITA), acting on behalf of the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), has announced that Italian rider Giovanni Carboni has been banned for four years after the UCI Anti-Doping Tribunal ruled he committed an anti-doping rule violation based on abnormalities detected in his Athlete Biological Passport (ABP).
The ruling closes the process opened after analysis of the rider’s haematological values, which indicated the use of a substance or a prohibited method.
The investigation began after the Athlete Passport Management Unit (APMU) identified an adverse finding while reviewing Carboni’s haematological biological passport.
An independent expert panel unanimously concluded that the alterations recorded during and after the 2024 Tour de Langkawi were highly consistent with the use of a prohibited substance or method.
Following the UCI’s results management process, the case was referred to the UCI Anti-Doping Tribunal, which issued its decision on the 3rd of August.
Four-year suspension and results disqualified
The Tribunal found that Carboni had violated Article 2.2 of the UCI Anti-Doping Rules, relating to the use of prohibited substances or methods.
As a result, the Italian has received a four-year suspension, running from September 2025 to September 2029.
The ruling also disqualifies all results obtained by Carboni between the 29th April 2025, the start date of the Tour de Langkawi, and the 11th September that year, when his provisional suspension began.

The decision can still be appealed
The Anti-Doping Tribunal’s decision is not yet final. The rider, the UCI/ITA, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the relevant National Anti-Doping Organization (NADO) retain the right to appeal to the appeals division of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
For its part, the ITA has stated it will make no further comment on the case unless there are new developments in the proceedings.
