At the start, there were multiple attempts to breakaway, but none were successful. Rémi Cavagna and Valentin Ferron managed to separate themselves from the peloton. The duo worked together to create a gap of 3 minutes and 15 seconds.
The duo had ridden ahead of the peloton for more than 100 kilometres but were eventually caught by the peloton just 35 kilometres from the finish line. Julian Alaphilippe took advantage of an opportunity to attack and was joined by David Gaudu. They quickly established a lead of 1 minute against the peloton.
It all came down to Gaudu and Alaphilippe battling it out in the end. Julian Alaphilippe proved to be faster and secured the win. David Gaudu finished behind and took the silver. Mattias Skjelmose completed the podium.
