INEOS Grenadiers coach Xabier Artexte, who has worked with Egan Bernal for the last few years, has expressed his confidence that the Colombian will be able to return to competition after his life-threatening crash and it could be as soon as this year.
"Why not? He's working to come back as soon as possible. It can be in 2023, but it can also be at the end of this year. You can't discard him. What I'm saying doesn't have scientific base, because I don't know what will happen. But I see him working, and once he has a strong musculoskeletal, he can inclusively correct some decompensation that he had before, be more balanced," Artexte said.
"He's got motivation, incredible willpower to come back. Now he's pedaling in a sitting position. Right now he can't go out on the road, but he can ride a standing bike at home, in the most ergonomically position for him, the most comfortable," he added.
Artexte also said that Bernal's "hip and leg are fine," confirming his recovery process on the lower-body injuries is also going well. Bernal posted a picture on social media this Saturday back on his trainer, he pointed out once again that "as long as there's faith, everything is possible."
