Matej Mohoric took one of the biggest victories of his career to date at the 2022
Milano-Sanremo. Key to his victory on that day was a daredevil descent to the line from the then Slovenian national champion.
Also in the mix that day was Mohoric's Slovenian compatriot,
Tadej Pogacar. Although the UAE Team Emirates eventually came home in fifth position, just two seconds behind Mohoric at the line, the Bahrain - Victorious rider has recently revealed a key piece of advice he gave that may have made a race-winning difference.
"Don't follow me on the descent," Mohoric recalls telling Pogacar in quotes collected by Eurosport. "You are very young and you have to win the Tour de France," he continues.
Pogacar is arguably the rider best-placed to join the likes of Eddy Merckx in winning all five of cycling's monuments. With Il Lombardia, Liege-Bastogne-Liege and the Tour of Flanders already under his belt, perhaps another conversation with Mohoric, one where the secret to the descent is shared, will unlock Milano-Sanremo for a fourth monument on Pogacar's palmares.
