President of the UCI David Lappartient has confirmed that cycling esports events will be included at the 2025 Olympic Esports Games in Abu Dhabi.
In an interview with Cycling Weekly, Lappartient, who is the Chairman of the IOC’s Esports and Gaming Liaison Group and is a member of the IOC’s general assembly, said that “the Olympic Esports Games will start in 2025 and will include cycling esports. The programme will include gaming, sports simulation, and physical virtual activities and will be a distinct Olympic Esports Games”.
Although many would expect Zwift to be the chosen platform to host these events, given that it was chosen to host the cycling events for the Olympic Esports Series in Singapore in June 2023, it is still unconfirmed.
A potential rival to Zwift is the MyWhoosh platform, with whom Lappartient recently signed a deal to make them the main virtual cycling platform partner of the UCI Road World Championships until 2026.
MyWhoosh has also received substantial funding and support from the UAE government and the event being held in Abu Dhabi could have a major influence on which platform is chosen.
