Damiano Caruso has abandoned the
Tour de France after a disappointing performance, he will not take to the start of stage 18, which will make for the first ever Grand Tour he does not complete - having the 2011 Vuelta a España as his debut.
The news have been reported by Gazzetta dello Sport who are on site. Caruso had struggled with form throughout the race, being far from the level he reached last year at the Giro d'Italia when he finished second. After the abandon of Jack Haig earlier in the month Caruso had taken up the role of team leader, however was sitting 22nd in the GC after yesterday's finish in Peyragudes.
The team had focused on stage wins, being close with Fred Wright in Saint-Étienne where the Briton finished second, however the likes of Dylan Teuns and Matej Mohoric failed to perform at the expected level and haven't brought in the hoped results.
