Colombians' grades in the Giro d'Italia: Rubio and Buitrago get B's and Gaviria gets F's

Four Colombians participated in the Giro d'Italia 2023 and not four of the bunch, but four of the best in the WorldTour panorama. For being so few, they have given war, have won stages and have been close to the top 10 overall.

Rigoberto Urán, Santiago Buitrago, Einer Rubio and Fernando Gaviria left Fossacesia Marina, but only three of them made it to Rome. Below, we give their performances.

NOTES FROM THE COLOMBIANS TOUR DE FRANCE 2023.

Rigoberto Urán (DNF).

Rigo was unlucky in the 2023 Giro d'Italia. He did not come for the overall, he came to try to hunt a mountain stage as he had achieved in the Vuelta a España 2022. However, the Covid crossed his path and he had to retire before stage 10 when he had not yet ridden any day suitable for his characteristics.

Einer Rubio (Notable).

First grand tour competing with the best for the young Movistar Team climber and performing at a high level. He has shown he has the legs to fight for big stages and to ride in big climbs with the general classification.

He won by intelligence in Crans-Montana over two riders of the stature of Thibaut Pinot and Jefferson Cepeda. He doesn't get the "A" because he didn't attack more. He missed a golden opportunity on stage 18 in Val di Zoldo to fight for another partial win and the mountains jersey, but he didn't get in. Still, great Giro d'Italia for him.

Santiago Buitrago (Notable).

We can consider that Rubio's grade is high and Santi Buitrago's is low. He gets the '7' because he won the queen stage of the Giro d'Italia 2023, the Tre Cime di Lavaredo. But he stays there because he did absolutely nothing up to that point.

Bahrain Victorious we don't know what he played at during the whole corsa rosa, but the fact is that Buitrago didn't attack or keep up with the best for many stages. When he did, he showed his class and won, as in 2022, another stage in the corsa rosa, a race that suits his characteristics perfectly. We want to see more of him in 2024.

Fernando Gaviria (Suspense).

It is the turn of the other Colombian of Movistar Team, Fernando Gaviria, who we can say that he has disappointed in the Corsa Rosa. He came to try to get a stage sprint and for not getting did not get almost no great positions (seventh in stage 2, fifth in stage 6 and sixth in stage 17).

In Napoli he had his only real chance, but he started the sprint too early and was overtaken in the last meters by several riders. Then, he lost some chances due to crashes. Disappointing his Giro d'Italia.
