BREAKING: Vuelta a Espana 2026 drastically shortens Stage 15 due to extreme heat concerns

The Vuelta a España 2026 has decided to modify the route of stage 15, scheduled for Sunday, 06.09.2026 between Palma del Río and Córdoba, due to the high temperatures forecast during the day. The organisers have activated the extreme weather protocol to protect the riders’ health and ensure the best possible conditions for the race to unfold.
The change is particularly significant in terms of distance. The stage was initially set at 189.7 kilometres, but will now run to just 110.2 kilometres. The organisers have therefore trimmed almost 80 kilometres from a day that, in its original design, was to take the peloton from Palma del Río to Córdoba.
Alongside the route reduction, the start time has also been adjusted. The neutralised start will take place at 14:50, with the flag drop at 15:00.
The modification goes beyond the distance. The race will also leave the initially planned course from kilometre 52. At that point, the peloton will take the CO-3402 towards Santa María de Trassierra, instead of continuing along the A-3075 to Villaviciosa de Córdoba as originally set.

In this way, the organisers adapt the stage to the forecast conditions for Sunday, significantly reducing the time riders are exposed to extreme heat.
La Vuelta activates the protocol for extreme temperatures
The decision follows the activation of the weather protocol for extreme temperatures. The organisers explain that the change was adopted after a meeting with the different parties involved in the race.
Specifically, representatives of the Commissaires’ Panel, the teams, the riders, and La Vuelta’s management took part, analysing the day’s forecast conditions and sharing their views.
“The decision was taken after activating the protocol for extreme temperatures and following a meeting between representatives of the Commissaires’ Panel, the teams, the riders, and La Vuelta’s management,” the organisation stated.
After considering the points raised during the meeting and taking into account the forecast weather conditions, it was decided to modify both the route and the stage timetable.
Therefore, stage 15 of La Vuelta 2026 is reduced to 110.2 kilometres, with a neutralised start at 14:50 and race start at 15:00. It is a substantial change from the initially announced route, prompted by the high temperatures expected in Andalucía during the day.
