Even though Tadej Pogacar is the main star at the UAE Emirates, that doesn't mean there aren't others they can also bet big on. And something could indicate that Brandon McNulny is one of them. In any case, the UAE's sporting director, Mauro Gianetti, is optimistic.
"Brandon has no limits. His numbers are really good, his climbing, his single start, he recovers well. He can win everything," Gianetti tells Velo. In fact, the UAE has designed the American's race calendar in such a way that they expect him to win races. They have been able to do that, among other things, because Pogacar has to ride the Giro d'Italia.
"His calendar this year is designed to win races. Of course he has to help sometimes, but he's a rider we believe in so much and he wants a calendar to win races," says the sporting director. But in what kinds of races should McNulty take the wins he clearly has the potential for? He actually has a little doubt about that himself.
"I still feel like I'm trying to figure out what kind of rider I am. I mean, I'm trying to be a GC rider, but then sometimes I have really good time trials, sometimes I'm good in one day, so maybe next year will be a chance to explore races other than the big, week-long stage races. I'm still trying to grow," he says himself.
