Two years on from when Biniam Girmay made history as the first black African to win a Grand Tour stage, the Eritrean will return to the Giro d'Italia in 2024 as leader of the Intermarché - Wanty team.
Taking stage 10 of the 2022 Giro d'Italia ahead of Mathieu van der Poel no less, Girmay captured the attention of a continent with his historic stage win. Now famously, the then-22-year-old celebrated a little too hard on the podium afterwards, injuring himself as he took a champagne cork to the eye and actually being forced to leave the race as a result.
Although he won't be hoping to replicate those scenes, another stage win isn't completely out of the question for Girmay. With the likes of Dion Smith, Adrien Petit, Madis Mihkels, Dries De Pooter and Roel van Sintmaartensdijk in support of Girmay, plus the climbing duo of Lilian Calmejane and Kevin Colleoni for likely breakaway raids, Girmay isn't the team's only hope of victory.
