Ben O'Connor finished on the podium of the Criterium du Dauphiné last season and he aims to match results this year. For him the Dauphiné and the Tour de France build the biggest goal of the season, and he looks to have his best legs from this week onwards.
"We are entering the part of the season that I love, the summer and the Critérium du Dauphiné – Tour de France sequence. For me, this is the most important moment of the year and the one where I have to be efficient," O'Connor said leading up to the race. "The last three weeks, in altitude training course in Sierra Nevada (Spain), went well. I am now happy to resume competition and regain the sporting level I want, after a less fruitful start to the season than expected."
The Australian has so far not had the best of seasons, racing to a sixth place at the Tour Down Under, but then failing to leave a mark throughout the spring. It is the opposite of last year's consistency, although he had to abandon the Tour - but then finished eighth at the Vuelta a Espana. He looks to show the best version of himself once again.
AG2R Citroën Team are in need of a leader and of UCI points, as they sit just above the current red line. "For me, good results in the Dauphiné then in the Tour are synonymous with a successful season. As usual, I will give my best to be at the same level as last year and build my confidence for the future," he concluded.
