Ever since the summer of 2023 things have not clicked for
David Gaudu. Although he ended the Tour de France strong he only rode to 9th in the overall classification, but ever since many DNF's are in his result's sheet. One more (DNS) is added today as he does not start stage 3 of
Itzulia Basque Country.
The Frenchman fell in the closing kilometers, suffering a deep cut in the hand. “He didn’t realize when he fell, he only thought about getting back. His hand is really damaged, he had ten stitches. He cannot brake or shift gears," team DS Benoit Vaugrenard said in a press release. "Last night he was motivated to continue but today it was the hand that said no. It's painful for him, he will have to continue to fight but for the moment he is out of luck. It’s another setback.”
After not finishing Paris-Nice due to illness and struggling to perform at O Gran Camiño, it continues to be a season with nothing to show for the Frenchman. Not only does he leave one of the races in the calendar that suits him the best, but this injury also jeopardizes the Ardennes classics.
Jacky Maillot, team doctor, tells details about the procedure that Gaudu has underwent following the finale of yesterday's stage. “David has significant wounds on his right hand, requiring surgery late in the evening yesterday... The black cat has been chasing us for several weeks. It's starting to do a lot. It’s not easy to swallow.” Gaudu does not take to the start this morning in Ezpeleta.
