2024 Tour de France stage 17 GC Update: Remco Evenepoel gains time back on Tadej Pogacar & Jonas Vingegaard after brutally fast day

With every stage from now until Nice having the potential for general classification shake-ups, stage 17 looked for a while like being a quiet day. That was at least until Tadej Pogacar did Tadej Pogacar things and launched a brutal attack on the penultimate climb of the day.

The Maillot Jaune spotted main rival Jonas Vingegaard was isolated on the penultimate climb of the day and launched a brutal attack. Although the Dane initially looked as if he would be able the follow, the Team Visma | Lease a Bike leader was quickly caught and passed by Remco Evenepoel with Vingegaard left shaking his head. On the descent however, thanks in part to Vingegaard picking up teammate Christophe Laporte, both Evenepoel and Pogacar were reeled back in by the Team Visma | Lease a Bike leader.

That wasn't the end of the fight however, as on the 3rd category climb to the line, Evenepoel attacked again and with Pogacar and Vingegaard watching each other, the Soudal - Quick-Step leader latched onto teammate Jan Hirt, dropped from the break and began to pull away, putting time into Vingegaard and potentially closing the gap to 2nd overall. What that all means for the GC is that Pogacar still holds a commanding overall lead, 3:11 ahead of Vingegaard, whilst Evenepoel has gained back 12 seconds on the Dane and is now 1:58 off 2nd place. 

Behind, despite Giulio Ciccone making an attack, there were no place shifting in the top-10. Joao Almeida remains 4th, Mikel Landa 5th, Carlos Rodriguez 6th, Adam Yates 7th, Ciccone 8th, Derek Gee 9th and Santiago Buitrago completing the top-10 in 10th.
