2024 Tour de France stage 12 GC Update: Primoz Roglic likely out of Maillot Jaune contention after disastrous late crash

Stage 12 of the Tour de France 2024 promised little activity in the fight for the general classification. In principle there should be a sprint finish, and the favourites for the yellow jersey should not have too complicated a day. That's not quite how things transpired however.

Unfortunately, the changes to the Top 10 came after a disastrous late crash for Primoz Roglic, caused by the fall of an Alexey Lutsenko with just 12 kilometres to go. The entire Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe team was affected by the incident, and with the Slovenian visibly bloodied down his right side, they were unable to catch the peloton, losing a considerable amount of time that leaves him likely out of the fight for overall victory.

Roglic moves down to 6th overall, 4 minutes and 42 seconds behind Tadej Pogacar, who retains the yellow jersey. The race leader was also involved in a crash, albeit early in the day, which did not affect him in any way. The UAE Team Emirates leader still leads by 1 minute and 6 seconds over Remco Evenepoel, and 1 minute and 14 seconds over Jonas Vingegaard.

The beneficiaries of Roglic's fall are João Almeida, who moves from 5th to 4th place, and Carlos Rodríguez, who moves from 6th to 5th place but is still more than 3 minutes off the provisional overall podium. Behind the Slovenian, Mikel Landa is 7th, 56 seconds behind Primoz, Adam Yates 8th, Juan Ayuso 9th, a minute and a half behind Landa, and Giulio Ciccone closes the Top 10.
