Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe lost three riders in the crash that has marked stage 2 of the Tour de Hongrie, but yellow jersey Danny van Poppel saved the day by winning his second bunch sprint in as many days.
The stage was marked by a massive crash that happened with still 125 kilometers to go, which has seen three Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe riders abandon, alongside two of the main GC contenders for the week - Pablo Torres and Rainer Kepplinger. The catastrophic situation saw most of the peloton go down or get blocked, but eventually the situation would stabilize.
Siebe Deweirdt, Luca Cretti, Michal Schruan, Balázs Rózsa and János Pelikán have formed the day's breakaway, but in the flat Hungarian roads they never proved to be a threat for the day's outcome. They were caught with still 31 kilometers to go.
It was a drag race to the line, with Team Jayco AlUla having a perfect leadout for Dylan Groenewegen who then launched his sprint first, but in an incredibly tight finale compatriot and yellow jersey Danny van Poppel was able to go through right in the final meters. He beat Groenewegen and Tim Torn Teutenberg to the finish line.
