The Amstel Gold Race 2025 will be held this Sunday, April 21, but the controversy has already made its presence felt. A pro-Palestine group, FPM (Free Palestine Maastricht), has announced that it will stage a protest during the race.
The reason is due to the participation of the
Israel - Premier Tech team. The group, has launched the following message: "Among the cyclists is an alleged 'Israeli' team, backed by Zionist billionaire Ron Baron and rigged as part of 'Start-Up Nation', a propaganda machine of the regime," one can start reading in the FPM statement.
"It's not just cycling, it's sports laundering: a deliberate attempt to whitewash the crimes of apartheid and occupation through international sport. (...) Boycott the race. Break the silence," it concludes.
It has not yet been confirmed how the Free Palestine Maastricht protest will take place, but the location has been confirmed. It will take place on a bridge in Maastricht where the Amstel Gold Race will pass during the neutralized start, so it will not affect the normal course of the race where Tadej Pogacar, Remco Evenepoel or Tom Pidcock, among others, will participate.
