Results MTB World Championships 2026 Elite Men - Tom Pidcock storms from fifth row to rainbow jersey as Mathieu van der Poel fades to 30th

Tom Pidcock produced a spectacular charge from the fifth row of the starting grid to win the elite men's cross-country world title at the 2026 UCI Mountain Bike World Championships in Val di Sole, while Mathieu van der Poel's bid for the one rainbow jersey still missing from his collection ended in 30th place.
Pidcock had been pushed back to around 32nd through the short opening loop, with Van der Poel similarly buried around 30th as both multi-discipline stars immediately ran into traffic on the narrow sections of the Italian course.
From there, however, their races moved in completely different directions. Pidcock surged to ninth by the start of lap two, gradually worked his way across to the leading group and then took control of the race himself in the second half.
Van der Poel never made the same breakthrough and eventually crossed the line 4:44 behind the new world champion.

Adrien Boichis initially looked the strongest of the established MTB specialists. The Frenchman, already crowned short-track world champion earlier in these championships, repeatedly drove the pace at the front as Charlie Aldridge, Martin Vidaurre Kossmann, Cole Punchard and others helped shape the leading group.
Pidcock was forced to do the chasing. Despite a small mistake on lap two and another brief error later in the race, the two-time Olympic champion kept reducing the deficit and finally completed the junction before the halfway point, joining Boichis, Aldridge, Vidaurre Kossmann and Punchard at the front. Once there, he stopped chasing and started attacking.
Pidcock launched an explosive move on the opening climb of lap six and immediately began reducing the title fight. Punchard was the first to lose contact, before Boichis also cracked under the repeated pressure. By the beginning of the penultimate lap, only Aldridge and Vidaurre Kossmann remained with Pidcock, with Boichis already 17 seconds behind.
Vidaurre Kossmann was the next to go as Pidcock continued hammering the climbs. Aldridge briefly fought back by taking the inside line on the 4X descent to move ahead of his compatriot, but Pidcock responded on the major climb later in the lap and opened daylight for the first time.
He began the final lap nine seconds clear of Aldridge and immediately extended that advantage to 18 seconds at the first timing split. From there, there was no way back for the chasers as Pidcock rode clear to seal the rainbow jersey after one of the most striking recovery rides of the championships.
Van der Poel's rainbow bid unravels
The contrast with Van der Poel was stark. The Dutchman had arrived in Val di Sole chasing the elite MTB world title that would have added to his rainbow jerseys on the road, in cyclocross and on gravel, but his race never recovered from the congested opening.
While Pidcock moved rapidly through the field, Van der Poel was still around 20th by the middle of the race and had already slipped to roughly 1:40 behind the leaders. His deficit continued to grow as the race wore on, and he eventually finished 30th at 4:44.
At the front, Aldridge had been the final rider capable of staying with Pidcock before being dropped on the penultimate lap, while Punchard moved back into third place late on after Vidaurre Kossmann faded.
Pidcock, though, had already settled the biggest question. From around 32nd position after the start loop, he had ridden all the way through the field, broken the strongest specialists one by one and finished the day in the rainbow jersey.

- Am interested to get more of your insight on what you’re saying. I know from experience and logic that fractures CAN heal stronger (IF properly treated). On the other hand, there are also cases where fractures cannot heal properly and stay weak points or where another fall on a (maybe stronger) fracture creates a more complex fracture adjacent making it more problematic to heal. But my real concern is whether this stronger repairing applies to every type of bone as vertebrae are quite unique in that it isn’t really the bone that matters but the interaction of the ensemble with other parts. Ican even imagine that the change of size and shape of the new material vertebrae can have implications on the very sensitive surrounding tissue and functions.
