The 21-year-old Puck Pieterse, runner-up in the cyclocross world championship and fifth in Strade Bianche, has won the opening race of the Mountain Bike World Cup in Nove Mesto, Czech Republic. The Dutchwoman got the victory thanks to a great attack on a climb that overcame the favourite, Pauline Ferrand-Prévot.
The British Evie Richards started very strong and took a lead of ten seconds over her pursuers. She was, however, unlucky. She punctured the rear tire and had to stop to change it. She then had a chain issue. That ruled her out of the fight for victory.
Ferrand-Prévot and Pieterse led the race from then and when Dutchwoman blew up her rival in the last meters it was game-over. Loana Lecomte, also French, finished third and Richards, after a great comeback, finished fourth with the best pace.
