Wout van Aert has been crowned the winner of the 2023 Tour of Britain after a thrilling finale in Caerphilly as Carlos Rodriguez took a brilliant solo victory on stage 8.
After the stage was temporarily halted early on, Carlos Rodriguez and Stephen Williams found themselves off the front heading into the final 35km. With the time gaps so tight in the general classification, if one of these could push on, overall victory could be theirs.
Summiting Caerphilly Mountain for the first time, the lead duo were maintaining a narrow gap before Rodriguez attacked clear solo over the top. Over the climb the second time, Rodriguez still had 20 seconds over a 4-man chase group led by Wout van Aert. With the GC time gap 39 seconds between the Spaniard and the Belgian at the start of the day however, the difference wasn't big enough for overall victory.
