Marlen Reusser has put in a massive week of racing in Switzerland, as she conquered the overall classification of the Tour de Suisse Women ahead of none other than riders such as Demi Vollering and Katarzyna Niewiadoma. Now, she aims for a Grand Tour win after the climbing performances she just put in.
Speaking to Cycling Pro Net, Reusser beamed in happiness after taking a massive win in her own home country: "I've been asked this question so many times that it's a bit like, you know, for me, I'm so much in today, in the present, I'm enjoying it so much, can you imagine the crowd we had here in Switzerland? There were so many people on the sides of the road and I was hearing my name everywhere".
"I've really enjoyed racing, so I'm not at all thinking about last year, just when I feel like I have a moment of calm and then I think about the surprise, grateful, very grateful, to be able to be like this here, right now, wow, it's great."
Having withstood the pace on the climbs, Reusser then won the final stage, in yellow, with a solo attack on the final flat kilometers of the stage. It was the perfect way to end the perfect week of racing. "Yes, we were waiting for this kind of situation. I had to try, I could also sprint, I was also confident for the sprint, but if I could do it like this it is clear that it is better and maybe safer and I am very happy that it was like this."
"Yes, I don't think I needed to attack or anything. For me it was just the danger of having a slow pace, with attacks happening, to control it. I always stayed a little bit to be sure I could follow the attacks and set a pace where it was a little bit more difficult to attack, it was a very good strategy".
With the Giro Donne right at our doorstep, the Swiss rider will now set her sights on what could potentially be the biggest victory of her career: "The ambitions are high, they were already high before this race. It's a race that suits me very well, starting with a very difficult time trial and mountain stages at the end, so we've had it in our sights for a while, the whole team is preparing for the Giro and we really want to go for the win. You never know in road cycling, you can't say you're going to win but we're going to try," she concluded.
