Tadej Pogacar has started his very first
Paris-Roubaix this Sunday morning, but despite this lack of experience in the flat cobblestones, he is amongst the very top favourites in a race where it seems like all main classics specialists are at their best.
UAE Team Emirates - XRG may deploy different tactics to the Tour of Flanders however.
"I slept very well, thank you. Our plan? I don't know yet, I have to see how I ride on the cobblestones. I hope there will be as many of us as possible after the harder cobblestone sections, so we can play on the extra numbers," the World Champion shared with Sporza.
Racing in cobblestones is not unusual for the Slovenian, and it's not the first time that he will race around this area. However, racing the Hell of the North is an experience like no other, a race where tension and risk of crashes is perhaps as high as any other in professional cycling.
"We should get there already, but you never know. As I said, it's my first time here. Like my first time at Milano-Sanremo, I didn't know exactly what to do and how to race, here it's the same," he argues. However in Sanremo he was always a headliner and key part of the race everytime he took to the start, and here should be no exception.
"I have a team to guide me, and we have 3 or 4 guys who can also win this race, so we can play those cards," Pogacar warns. "It's obviously a challenge and a challenge to have to win without being able to make the difference on the climbs, because it's totally flat, even if the cobblestones are not that easy. Our legs will be tired at the end anyway. We'll try!"
