Volta a Portugal: Luís Gomes takes stage win as breakaway thrives on hilly day

Kelly-Simoldes-UD Oliveirense have taken their stage win at the Volta a Portugal, as the breakaway went on to take the win via Luís Gomes out of the day's breakaway.

The large breakaway that went up the road had the advantage, with little urgency in the peloton to chase back the escapee group on the hilly day. The final climb summited with eight kilometers to go, where in front Luís Gomes and Joaquim Silva.

The duo were joined by another four riders in the descent, which would end up fighting for the win. Luís Gomes went on to take what was his third Volta a Portugal stage, beating Gonçalo Leaça and Txomin Juaristi at the finish.

In the peloton Luís Fernandes made a move close to the summit of the climb, but there wasn't enough impact to create meaningful splits. The GC riders largely arrived together in a small group.
