For the second time of the day, Wout van Aert has hit the deck hard on stage 16 at the 2024 Vuelta a Espana.

After having bounced back up from his first crash to get himself into the day's breakaway, Van Aert took maximum points at each of the first two categorised climbs. On a wet and slippery descent however, the Team Visma | Lease a Bike star crashed and went hard into a gutter alongside Felix Engelhardt and Isaac del Toro.

Sadly, especially his excellent form and with the World Championships in mind, things do not look good and his abandon has now sadly been confirmed. See the incident for yourself down below!

Sorry to see WVA out of the race with a nasty looking crash. He had Green jersey won and the only thing to go in the break today for was mountain points. A compettion he was very unlikley to win. I wish he could turn back the clock and make a different decision.

Very sorry to see this. The most colorful, daring, nicest cyclist out of the race. Bah. Wish him a quick recovery. You're the best, Wout!

Too much crashes... today (IMHO) he took an unnecessary risk: he had won almost all the points then maybe he could have descended very cautiously. After all, Forza, Wout! get well soon!

Wout's knee did not look very good when he decided to call it quits. Hopefully he's incurred no serious damage, but it looks like his season is most likely over.

So unfair. Hope he didnt break anything, but the same I thought in March.
