Mexico has won the Tour de l'Avenir in 2023 and with that came many UCI points that have helped bring more athletes to Europe to compete. Isaac Del Toro was a headliner during this Monday's under-23 time-trial World Championships; but his compatriot David Elías Rico ended his race on the floor after a dramatic crash.
It was a time-trial with unstable weather conditions, featuring damp roads both at it's start and finish. Ultimately, not what decided the outcome of the race after Iván Romeo put in the time-trial of his life, but this also meant that there were crashes. One such was of Rico.
After Del Toro's teammate Jay Vine crashed in the elite men's event, his compatriot Rico crashed on the same event, somersaulting over the bike and although wanting to continue the race, he was unable. However, the 20-year old escaped serious injuries.
