On what was supposed to be a regulation sprint stage that allowed the general classification riders a moment of calm before the upcoming mountains, Mother Nature ensured stage 5 of the 2023 Giro d'Italia would not be easily forgotten.
Multiple crashes saw marred the day's racing as Remco Evenepoel went down on multiple occasions, his general classification rival Primoz Roglic and the Maglia Rosa Andreas Leknessund both also hit the deck. Eventual stage winner Kaden Groves recovered from a crash to take his victory and even the final sprint wasn't free from drama as Mark Cavendish slid across the finish line on his side.
