VIDEO | Following Mathieu van der Poel on his recon of the Trouée d'Arenberg

By now, Artem Shcherbyna is a name that becomes more and more recognizable in pro cycling. The Ukrainian Youtuber had multiple interesting videos throughout the winter following riders such as Tadej Pogacar, Jonas Vingegaard, Tom Pidcock and Remco Evenepoel in Spain; and now he has followed Mathieu van der Poel at the one and only Trouée d'Arenberg to provide interesting footage.
The 7-minute video showcases the changed course into the famous cobbled sector itself, which has become much more technical in an effort to reduce speeds at the entrance of Arenberg where a lot of brutal crashes have happened in the past.
In the sector itself van der Poel was not riding in the cobbles when possible, knowing the sector and it's best lines by head likely. In stark contrast, Wout van Aert rode through the cobbles, punctured and almost crashed in his recon. You can check the video below:

You either play it safe or risky, Tadej seems incapable of playing it safe. Great if P-R recovery went well but maybe it would go even better without one or both of these intermediate races, nobody knows in advance but IF your main goal is LBL then treat it that way and don’t care too much about the others, ride them to prepare for LBL. Not sure that’s what we saw last week and not sure what he’ll do now BUT, why not take a leaf out the book of a master and consider riding this one in support of another team member to give a chance to, it won’t hurt your reputation, on the contrary, as the JP/MVDP combo shows, people appreciate it, and if you imply you MIGHT in advance (obviously no need to warn rivals which strategy you’re going to adopt), nobody is going to criticise you for “losing”.Mistermaumau22-04-2025

- Always depends on who lines up and how badly he’d want it. Imagine 3 years from now with LBL and and Olympic medal in his pocket, he could consider it his last challenge and neglect everything else to go specifically for that only with a team geared towards it. It would only take good execution and one or two missing favourites for it to happen. In cycling you usually don’t come away too well saying never to possibilities.Mistermaumau22-04-2025
