With 18 kilometers to go on today's stage there was one of the most dramatic crashes of the Vuelta a España. UAE Team Emirates had three riders in the day's breakaway but went down to one as both Jay Vine and Brandon McNulty crashed. The latter went down a ravine.
The American crashed in a right-hand bend and slid under the roadside barriers, and essentially landed in a wooded area with plenty vegetation - which may have actually prevented worst consequences. The American, first leader of the Vuelta, suffered lots of cuts and gashes throughout his arms and face, but was able to continue the race.
