#TDF2022 Things didn’t go to plan for @GroenewegenD today, but there’s plenty more opportunities to come 👊
Team BikeExchange - Jayco were one of the team who worked throughout today to provide a chance for Dylan Groenewegen to sprint for the win, however the Dutchman did not have the right setup for the dash to the line and had to settle with a Top10 place.
“That is also part of it. But usually after a disappointing day I am always at my best, so tomorrow is another chance," Groenewegen said at the end of the day, disappointed. Having seen Team BikeExchange - Jayco work throughout the day, controlling the breakaway and providing the confidence for the Dutch sprinter, it came as a bad result to see Groenewegen cross the line in eighth place not having been able to contest the win.
“It was hectic in the final anyway, for everyone. I got a little boxed in on the right, while Bling [Matthews] and Luka Mezgec were on the left. It was my fault that I wasn't there," he described. "At 450 meters there was another bend to the right and there I was almost against the boarding, then the sprint was finished". The 29-year old managed to sprint into a Top10, but it was a result that meant little at the end of the day.
The Dutchman also had good words to say about the day's winner Fabio Jakobsen, with whom he had been involved in a life-changing crash two years ago at the Tour de Pologne: "It's great that he's winning here, but he's had a consistently good year so far. I'm not very surprised that he wins, but he is just as much of an opponent as Caleb Ewan and Jasper Philipsen are".
Having proven to have the speed over the last few weeks Groenewegen will be a favourites for tomorrow's third stage, however he will need better luck in the final sprint to make it click. "We're going for it and I'm pretty much on edge now," he says. “Hopefully I can get revenge. The legs are and the plow is good enough. Let everything fall together tomorrow," he concluded.
