"Up to this point it hadn't been a good season" - Oscar Onley turns luck around with Burgos win

Oscar Onley had a difficult crash at the Tour Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes two months ago which put him out of action. Hanging above a ravine, the Scottish rider suffered a shoulder luxuation and several other injuries that prevented him from racing the Tour de France. Now, at the Vuelta a Burgos, the youngster took his first win with Netcompany INEOS.

Onley's absence from the Tour de France led INEOS to completely change its plans. The team looked to get stage wins and failed to do so, whilst Onley was planning his return going into the Vuelta a España.
Whilst Carlos Rodríguez has been told he would be leading the team at the Vuelta, the Spaniard struggled during today's hilltop finish at Pineda de la Sierra. The climb was just over 3 kilometers long, and Brandon Rivera set a high pace to set Onley up for success.
Mauro Aparício and Jarno Widar launched accelerations inside the final kilometer, but a sprint would decide the outcome of the day. It required great legs, but Onley rode to victory ahead of Giulio Ciccone.
"I'm very happy. Up to this point it hadn't been a good season. I had many setbacks and never got things going," Onley said in a post-race interview.
"The goal wasn't just to win, but to put kilometers in my legs. I had great support from the team, I'm happy to have been able to repay them. It's a great relief."

With the race's two mountain stages ahead, Onley will have big tests ahead. With the Vuelta a España beginning in the space of three weeks, the Scot will hope to have his best legs in the long efforts.
The likes of Felix Gall, Giulio Ciccone and Giulio Pellizzari will put him to the test over the coming days, looking to get his race lead. "I have shown that I have good legs. I have gained on some of the favourites, but there is still a long way to go," he concluded.
