Tom Pidcock's Olympic quest is already completed with a Mountain bike gold... but there's always more. Heading into the road race in the streets of Paris, most eyes are on Mathieu van der Poel, Remco Evenepoel and Wout Van Aert. However many other riders would certainly like to have their say in the medal fight. Pidcock among them.
"The mountain bike win has given him a huge confidence boost for the road race," warned Stephen Parks of the British Cycling Federation at Cyclingnews. "We'll have to ride well as a team and Tom has the legs to go for it. Everyone is willing to race for him, then it should be a fantastic race."
Can Pidcock land an Olympic double? It's certainly within the Brit's capabilities, according to Parks: "Gold is possible, but if there is one discipline in cycling that is unpredictable, it's the road race. The course is tough, it will be a war and everyone wants to win. We're going for it anyway and will definitely be fighting for the win."
On the 270km course, Joshua Tarling, Stephen Williams and Fred Wright will accompany the Ineos Grenadiers leader. For Pidcock, it'll be vital for any success to anticipate the race and create a group without all the sprinters. Then it'll be up to the freshly 25-year-old Brit to handle any of the big favourites still in the group as a reduced sprint might be a bit too much of a gamble after such long and hard race.
