Maxim Van Gils' hopes of scoring a large portion of UCI points for racing just 4.9km at the Vuelta a Andalucia have been reduced by the UCI, who have updated the allocation for the disrupted Spanish race and awarded the Lotto Dstny rider just 20 points.
The Vuelta a Andalucia was scheduled to last five days, with hilly stages in the south of Spain, however widespread protests by Spanish farmers meant the organisers had to cancel the opening two stages... and a bit later the final two stages as well, leaving only Friday’s 4.9km time trial.
Van Gils was a surprise winner ahead of Juan Ayuso and thus his team initially celebrated the 225 points he should've scored. However UCI quickly reduced the reward to just 20 points for the winner after a week spent in Spain. At least, Van Gils can enjoy a nice souvenir in form of the overall winner's jersey he was awarded.
