“It is an emphatic statement: I am here,”
Stephens said on TNT Sports. “Not that he has gone away, but: I am in the right shape and there is more under the hood.”
“He looks the best he has ever looked”
Vingegaard had already controlled the Giro before Piancavallo, but Stage 20 brought another full Visma | Lease a Bike commitment to stage victory rather than simple defence of pink.
When Vingegaard launched, Gall briefly followed before being distanced. Jai Hindley, Derek Gee-West, Thymen Arensman and Egan Bernal were left behind in the fight for the minor places as the maglia rosa rode clear alone.
Stephens felt Vingegaard may even have had more margin available. “We were just commenting: oh my God, he could have taken another minute out of those guys,” he said. “He looks the best he has ever looked.”
The Tour de France was never far from the discussion, although Stephens paused that comparison long enough to give Vingegaard’s Giro its own space. “Let’s not talk about Tadej right now,” Stephens said. “Let’s give him his moment. But it is exciting for what lies ahead in July.”

Hincapie points to Vingegaard’s recovery
Hincapie, a Tour de France stage winner and one of Armstrong’s key mountain support riders during his Grand Tour years, looked back to the 2024 crash that left Vingegaard facing a long road back. “Not only that, but two years ago he was in hospital wondering if he would ever ride a bike again,” Hincapie said. “So why not take advantage of this incredible form and win five stages of the Giro d’Italia and the overall?”
Vingegaard’s dominance in Italy has come through repeated attacks rather than passive control. He has chased opportunities deep into the third week, answered every high-mountain test and turned the final GC stage into another solo display.

Orla Chennaoui also stressed the emotional and mental scale of the comeback. “That is a physical recovery, but it is also a huge psychological recovery that he has had to undergo as well,” she said. “And we take our hats off to him. All rivalries aside, this performance in isolation has been phenomenal.”
Barring incident in Rome, Vingegaard will leave the Giro with five stage wins, the maglia rosa and cycling’s Grand Tour Triple Crown. The Tour de France battle with Pogacar will come soon enough. Piancavallo gave Vingegaard his own moment first.
