Tom Pidcock is the first at Alto do Malhão taking Stage 4 of Volta ao Algarve and becoming the new general classification leader

Tom Pidcock of INEOS-Grenadiers was the first at Alto do Malhão. The INEOS-Grenadiers team rider won the stage 4 of Volta ao Algarve ahead of João Almeida of the UAE Team Emirates and Ilan Van Wilder of Soudal-Quick-Step team.

3 riders escaped the peloton, with Kasper Asgreen (Soudal-Quick-Step) being the last to be caught around 30 kilometres to the finish. At around 25 km the peloton started the first passage in Alto do Malhão with Remi Cavagna (Soudal-Quick-Step) and Kobe Goossens (Intermarché-Circus-Wanty) forming a late breakaway being caught around 10 km to go.

Bora-hansgrohe started the climb with Jai Hindley being the first to attack, on the last 1.5 km Tom Pidcock(INEOS-Grenadiers) launched a powerful attack only being followed by Ilan Wan Wilder(Soudal-Quick-Step) and Oscar Onley (Team DSM) only to being caught on the last 500 meters with a group containing João Almeida. In the end an explosive uphill sprint finish happened.

All ended in an uphill sprint finish with Tom Pidcock (INEOS-Grenadiers) finishing ahead of João Almeida (Team UAE Emirates) and Ilan Van Wilder (Soudal-Quick-Step) completing the podium.
