Santiago Buitrago came close to winning stage 15 of the Vuelta a España. The Bahrain Victorious rider managed to get away from Remco Evenepoel and the rest of his breakaway companions along with Rui Costa in the final straight of the Lekunberri stage. However, he was not able to beat the Portuguese rider and Lennard Kämna who came back from behind in the final finish.
"Last day of the week, here you don't save a day, in the middle of the stage I was feeling good, but getting into the breakaway was a bit difficult. Today the legs responded super well, a pity that the finish wasn't at the top. Nothing, Rui showed that he was the strongest".
The Colombian climber regretted that the end of the stage was not at the top and admits that Rui Costa knew how to play his cards very well to take the win:
"We started to climb and I pulled to death to let him go, but the climb was not very steep, so it was very good on the wheel, I told him to go to the finish line together to have a closer sprint with only two riders."
