The Volta a Catalunya cycling event will be without Thomas De Gendt, who is still recovering from a fall during the Paris-Nice race and is unable to participate.
Out of all the races, this particular one is the Belgian's favourite and also happens to be the one in which he has won the most. "It's almost time for my favourite race of the year, the Tour of Catalonia. But unfortunately, I can't start because of complications after my crash in Paris-Nice. I am very sad to miss a competition that has been very successful for me,” De Gendt writes on social media.
His track record in the race over the past ten years has seen him win five stages, commencing with his first triumph in 2013. He continued to clinch wins in 2016, 2018, 2019, and 2021.
The news of the Belgian rider's absence has been confirmed by Lotto Dstny, who will now be competing in the race without him. “This is because of the consequences of his crash in Paris-Nice, where he bruised his calf and hand. Get well soon, Thomas,” read the statement on social media.
