Jonas Vingegaard soloed to a stunning stage win on the queen stage of the 2023 Vuelta a Espana, taking the win ahead of his Jumbo-Visma teammates Sepp Kuss and Primoz Roglic on the day of his daughter's birthday.
"I'm so happy, I couldn't have chosen a better day," said an emotional Vingegaard in his post-stage interview after the victory. "It's my daughter's birthday, I wanted to win for that. She is three years old. This victory is for her, for sure. Our plan was to gain time on the opponents, that's what happened. I am so happy and proud for my daughter Frida."
Jumbo-Visma have been the strongest team at the race so far but on stage 13 they really showcased their dominance. Vingegaard led home a one-two-three on the stage with the trio of teammates now sitting on the three podium spots in the general classification. "This was better than the plan," the Dane concluded his assessment.
