In a heroic performance on the individual time-trial on stage 20 of the Giro d'Italia, Primoz Roglic overcame a late mechanical and a 26-second deficit to take a stage win and snatch the Maglia Rosa from Geraint Thomas on the penultimate stage of the race.
Following the conclusion to the drama, everyone was trying to contemplate exactly what they had witnessed and the Eurosport analysts were no different. “We have seen Primoz put in incredible performances, but this today felt like the ride of his life," said presenter Orla Chennaoui with ex-pro Daniel Lloyd in complete agreement. “It feels that way."
“I don’t know what to think right now. You've got to take your hat off to Primoz Roglic, so over the moon for that guy. Whilst Geraint Thomas has had bad luck in his career, Primoz Roglic it just seems to follow him everywhere," continues Lloyd. “He has been so close in the Giro and Tour de France, and when we saw that mechanical it was like ‘my goodness, can anything more go wrong for this guy?’ In the end it was an emphatic victory in the time trial and 14 seconds on the general classification.”
Former sprint ace Robbie McEwen however, was thinking more of Geraint Thomas, who saw his Maglia Rosa dream fade away from him. “It is so unfortunate it had to be against Geraint Thomas, but I am so pleased for Primoz Roglic after what he has been through at this Giro," McEwen says. “Geraint Thomas has been so good throughout, I would have been happy to see either win.”
