Il se bat comme un lion. Ce n'est pas passé loin aujourd'hui. Repris à un kilomètre de l'arrivée par Miguel Angel Lopez, Thibaut Pinot termine 2e de la 4e étape du Tour des Alpes.
It has been a long time since Thibaut Pinot has raised his arms in glory in pro cycling, with the last time being the 2019 Tour de l'Ain. Today, it seemed like the winless streak was about to come to an end at the Tour of the Alps, but the Frenchman just barely missed out on a win after being caught in the final kilometer.
The Groupama - FDJ rider was visibly emotional after the finale, having seen Miguel Ángel López get to him inside the final kilometer, and drop Pinot right afterwards. "It's frustrating, as a win would have done me good after two difficult years. With my normal level I would have stayed out of the grip, that's what makes it so difficult. I would love to turn the page one day and be the first to cross the line again," Pinot said in a post-race interview.
After getting himself in the day's breakaway, Pinot was early in the final climb evidently the fastest climber in the group. Despite the hard chasing from Team DSM and INEOS Grenadiers, he managed to stay out in front until the very last minutes of racing.
“I am angry and sad. I hope one day I can smile again," he told reporters. However, he still has another day to try and get the win that has eluded him today, and the form he's shown today was a good sign for the months to come. “That's right, I feel a lot better again. Today was a difficult day, but tomorrow there will be another stage, " he concluded.
