The murky history of Grand Tour cycling refuses to leave the minds of many. With every standout performance, questions are asked as Jonas Vingegaard found out at the Tour de France earlier this year. In an attempt to display transparency, Remco Evenepoel has created a YouTube channel, giving a behind-the-scenes look at his career.
At the time of writing, the Belgian is wearing the Red Jersey as leader of the Vuelta a Espana and has so far uploaded one video to the channel from his time in Spain, reconning the first mountain stage as he looks to retain his Grand Tour crown. This video has drawn praise from Wim Lagae, a professor of sports marketing as he reveals to Sporza.
"The video has already been watched a lot by the standards of cycling," Lagae says in a glowing review of the young Belgian's channel. "It requires commitment, but Evenepoel opens his doors and that shows transparency. He also brings an authentic story."
"You also see other brands and sponsors pass by in the video. It is contemporary marketing, everyone is cycling along," he continues. "You also have to try to keep it interactive and what you see with Remco is in accordance with the manual. I'm quite impressed. He was raised almost digitally and of course he is surrounded by a team of professionals. But it does consume energy."
