Tadej Pogacar decided to race the individual time-trial at the 2022 World Championships as an outsider, and finished in an expected position, riding into sixth place following a strong performance in the 34-kilometer long route.
“I have pretty good feelings about this time trial. I'm quite happy with my performance. Sixth is 'OK'," he said at the end of the day. "I am very happy for Tobias Foss. It's a surprise for everyone, but we love that in cycling too. He should be proud of this achievement" Pogacar was never seemingly in contention for the medals, but managed to finish just in front of Filippo Ganna who experienced a more complicated day in the roads of Autralia.
Pogacar's sixth place comes as a good result, but he's already aiming towards next week's race. “I am already motivated. We have a good squad for Sunday. We may not be at the start with a complete selection, but we still have six good riders. We hope for a good result," he said. Pogacar will be one of the main contenders in the road race, taking into consideration his climbing and sprinting ability in the one-day races, and recent win at the GP de Montréal.
“With Belgium, the Netherlands, France and Great Britain, there are many strong blocks. We can also compete with these countries. Have I already explored the route? The focus was first on the World Time Trial Championships. We work through the local circuit so often in the race that it will soon become clear. We won't be faced with any surprises in the future," he concluded.
