Scott McGill has won the sixth stage of Volta a Portugal. He managed to overtake João Matias and Antonio Carvalho in the final moment to secure the gold.
The breakaway riders included Charles-Etienne Chrétien (Human Powered Health), Luís Gomes (Kelly/Simoldes/UDO), Rafael Lourenço (Altum general/Tavira/Maria Nova Hotel), Txomin Juaristi (Euskaltel-Euskadi), Carlos Iván Oyarzún (Aviludo-Louletano-Loulé Concelho), Oliver Rees (Trinity Racing), Bruno Silva (Tavfer-Mortágua-Ovos Martinados), and Joaquim Silva (Efapel). 45 kilometres from the finish they had three minutes lead.
The peloton finally caught up to them in the final 10 kilometers. It soon became clear that the riders were going to sprint for victory in the sixth stage of the Volta a Portugal. with Antonio Carvalho and Fábio Costa were leading the peloton for some time.
However, Scott McGill surprised the duo in the final kilometer as he took the victory. It was his second stage victory as he had previously won the first stage. João Matias finished second while Carvalho took the bronze. Frederico Figueiredo continues to hold his position as the overall leader.
